On Monday 14 September, shortly after breakfast, it began. By half past ten in the evening the seventh puppy was lying in the whelping box. Fenna did it calmly and on her own; we sat next to her with coffee, towels and a scale.

Four boys and three girls
To tell them apart, every puppy gets its own coloured collar: blue, green, orange and black for the boys, pink, purple and yellow for the girls. Birth weights were between 390 and 470 grams.
In the first week the puppies really only do two things: drink and sleep. We weigh them every morning and evening. All seven are gaining nicely every day, which is exactly what we want to see.
How is Fenna doing?
Fenna is a calm, caring mother. In the first days she hardly wanted to leave the whelping box; by now she comes along into the garden for short spells again, and Lotte peeks curiously around the corner.
